New Patent Suggests PS5 Might Emulate Old Games Via The Cloud
The latest patent from Sony suggests that they might be looking into emulation software to provide the PS5 with backwards compatibility.
Making a new console is hard. Making a new console play old games is even harder. You have to make sure that each new console can still play discs and cartridges from older models, and that can lead to a nightmare in engineering.
But what if you could just do it all via software? That’s what Sony might do with the PS5. Instead of including compatible hardware, the PS5 might just stream older PlayStation operating systems and then run older games via the cloud. The news comes from Twitter user @Renka_schedule who posted several recently uncovered Sony patents online. The one we want has to do with emulating older PlayStation
Second, cloud-based gaming naturally requires an internet connection, and while older games won’t need as much bandwidth as newer titles, they’ll still need a pretty fast connection in order to prevent latency issues. This will be a huge problem for gamers living in rural areas without access to fast internet.
